Russia is officially also known as Russian Federation. By area, Russia is the largest country on the earth.
Russia occupies large part of Eastern Europe & North Asia. As per United Nations data, by population Russia
occupies 9th place in the world.Russia contains the greatest reserves of mineral resources of any country in
the world. The country may hold as much as one-half of the world s potential coal reserves and may hold larger
reserves of petroleum than any other nation. Russia has been one of the most dominant players in the erstwhile
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Even after break up of USSR, Russia continues to play important role
in world politics. Russian is the local & official language in Russia. Russia's capital, Moscow, is one of the
largest cities in the world.
Climate
Russia has cold climate. Around 6 months of an year the temperature is below 0 °C. Otherwise the temperature is
very pleasant. All the buildings including hostels, classrooms, lecture halls, canteens, cafes as well as
buses & trains are centrally heated. So although it is cold outside, inside any building temperature is around
+25 to +30 °C throughout an year. Usually, climate is not a problem for Indian students studying in Russia.
